BenQ ScreenBar Max

BenQ ScreenBar Max lighting a dual monitor desk setup with a Christmas tree in the background

Introduction

If you work across two monitors, lighting gets complicated. A traditional desk lamp casts glare on one screen or the other, leaves part of the desk in shadow and takes up space you would rather use. Clip on monitor light bars solve that for a single screen, but they are not designed for a pair of angled monitors.

The BenQ ScreenBar Max is BenQ’s answer for dual monitor setups. Rather than clipping onto a monitor, it clamps to the back of your desk and its lamp head reaches over and in front of your screens. BenQ’s ASYM-TriZone Light optical design and a 36 degree shielding angle are designed to light a wide area of the desk while avoiding reflections on the screens, and a built in backlight softens the contrast between bright monitors and a darker room behind them.

What makes it stand out is how much it does automatically. An mmWave radar sensor switches the light on as you sit down, auto dimming keeps the desk at up to 700 lux, and you can tune brightness and colour temperature from a warm 2700K to a cool 6000K.

We used the ScreenBar Max over two weeks of home working, late night gaming and evening study sessions to see whether it lives up to its premium price.

Design & Build Quality

First impressions

The ScreenBar Max looks sleek and purposeful, with a slim lamp head that reaches over your monitors from behind. The aluminium frame feels premium, and once it is set up it almost disappears behind the screens.

Adjustability

The lamp head slides through a range of 17.5 to 28cm so you can position the light just in front of your monitors, and there are three height settings of 55, 63 and 71cm to suit different screen sizes and arrangements. BenQ recommends placing the head around 5cm in front of the monitors.

Installation

The clamp fits desks up to 6cm thick and has a compact 9 x 7cm footprint, with rounded edges to protect the desk surface. It is powered by the included adapter rather than USB. If you have a glass desk, BenQ recommends the separate ScreenBar Max Base instead of the clamp.

Durability

BenQ says every unit is tested to 10,000 sliding rail cycles, along with temperature, humidity and cable swing tests. It feels built to last.

Features & Performance

Glare free lighting

The ASYM-TriZone optical design and 36 degree shielding angle light a wide area of the desk without reflections on the screens, even with two monitors angled towards you.

Backlight

The backlight gently lights the wall behind your monitors, softening the contrast between bright screens and a dark room. This was the feature that made the biggest difference during evening sessions.

Presence sensor

The mmWave radar sensor turns the light on as you approach and can switch it off after around three minutes without significant movement. It made the light feel effortless to live with.

Auto dimming

Auto dimming adjusts brightness to keep the desk at a comfortable level of up to 700 lux, so the light adapts as daylight fades.

Brightness and colour temperature

Stepless brightness from 1 to 100% and colour temperature from 2700K to 6000K let you match the light to focused work, gaming or winding down. There is also a screen reading mode, a favourite mode and the option to switch between front and back lighting.

Light quality

Full spectrum LEDs with a colour rendering score above 95 are flicker free and free from blue light hazard, which matters if you are at your desk all day.

Real-World Experience

Our tester works from home three days a week across two monitors and games in the evenings. Previously, they used a desk lamp that caused glare on one screen and took up space on the desk.

The difference was immediate. The whole desk was evenly lit, there was no glare on either monitor and the old lamp could go.

Evening gaming sessions felt more comfortable. With the backlight on, the room no longer felt like a dark cave with two bright screens in it, and our tester’s eyes felt less tired at the end of the night.

The presence sensor quickly became a favourite. Sitting down at the desk and having the light come on by itself felt like a genuine upgrade rather than a gimmick.

The main frustration was the price, and the fact that it needs its own power adapter, which meant finding another socket under the desk.

Pros & Cons Table

Pros Cons
Wide, glare free lighting for two monitors Premium £239 price
Backlight reduces harsh contrast Needs its own power adapter
Presence sensor turns it on automatically Clamp not recommended for glass desks
Auto dimming up to 700 lux Desk base sold separately
Stepless brightness and colour temperature More than single monitor users need
Flicker free, full spectrum LEDs Not a replacement for room lighting

Who Should Buy This?

The BenQ ScreenBar Max is ideal for home workers, designers, students and gamers who use two monitors and spend long hours at their desk.

It is less suited to single monitor setups, where BenQ’s clip on ScreenBar models make more sense, or to anyone with a glass desk who does not want to buy the separate base.

As a gift, it is a brilliant, premium choice for anyone with a serious desk setup.

Alternatives & Comparisons

BenQ ScreenBar Halo 2

A clip on light bar with front and back lighting, designed for single monitors in dim rooms.

BenQ ScreenBar Pro

A clip on model with extended coverage and higher brightness, aimed at ultra wide monitors.

Budget monitor light bars

Cheaper clip on light bars from brands like Xiaomi and Quntis work well for single screens but are not designed for dual monitors.

Traditional desk lamps

Desk lamps are flexible and cheaper, but they take up space and often cause glare on angled screens.

Is It Worth The Money?

At £239, the ScreenBar Max is a premium purchase. For anyone who works across two monitors every day, the glare free lighting, backlight and automatic features make long sessions noticeably more comfortable, and the build quality suggests it will last for years.

We would describe it as fairly priced for dual monitor users, but overkill for a single screen.

Final Verdict

The BenQ ScreenBar Max is a smart, effective and stylish lighting solution for dual monitor desks. It lights your whole workspace without glare, softens the contrast behind your screens and switches itself on when you sit down.

It is expensive and needs its own power adapter, but for anyone who works or plays across two monitors, it is an excellent upgrade.
