Air up Twist Pro

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

The original appeal of air up is easy to understand. Drink ordinary water, smell a specially designed scent as you sip, and your brain interprets that aroma as flavour without needing to add sugar, sweeteners or flavouring directly to the water. The question is whether that clever idea remains appealing once the novelty wears off.

The air up Twist Pro is designed to make a stronger case for the system as an everyday water bottle rather than simply an interesting hydration gadget. The 600ml Tritan version reviewed here costs £30 at the time of writing and adds several genuinely useful improvements, including compatibility with still and sparkling water, an automatic pod activation system, a wide opening, a quick 180 degree twist lid, dishwasher-safe construction and a leakproof design when correctly closed.

We paired the Stormy Blue Twist Pro with the £11.99 Bestseller Plus Variety Pack, which contains five individual scent pods: Wild Berry, Ice Tea Peach, Watermelon, Cherry and Apple. air up rates Wild Berry and Apple at 3 out of 5 for intensity, while Ice Tea Peach, Watermelon and Cherry are rated 4 out of 5.

That turns out to be an excellent combination for someone trying air up properly for the first time. Rather than buying three identical pods and discovering that particular flavour is not for you, the variety box gives five noticeably different profiles to work through.

It also gives the Twist Pro an opportunity to show off one of its biggest advantages over some earlier air up bottles: sparkling water.

Adding fizz changes the experience more than expected. It does not suddenly turn plain sparkling water into a full-strength cherry cola or peach iced tea, but carbonation gives some scents additional character and helps bridge the gap between drinking ordinary water and reaching for a flavoured fizzy drink.

At a combined current retail price of £41.99 for the bottle and Bestseller Plus Variety Pack, however, this is considerably more expensive than simply buying a decent reusable bottle.

So, does air up’s scent technology genuinely make drinking water more enjoyable, and is the Twist Pro worth paying extra for?

After looking at the bottle as a complete system rather than judging it purely on the novelty of its scent pods, the answer is surprisingly positive, although it will suit some people considerably more than others.

Quick Verdict

Overall rating: 4.5 out of 5

Best for: People who find plain water boring, former or current fizzy drink fans, commuters, gym users, students and anyone looking for more variety without continually adding flavourings to their water.

Short summary: The air up Twist Pro is currently one of the most complete versions of the air up system. The 600ml Tritan bottle is light enough for everyday use, works with both still and sparkling water, is leakproof when correctly assembled and can go on the top rack of the dishwasher. Pairing it with the Bestseller Plus Variety Pack makes sense because the five different pods let you quickly work out which types of scent you enjoy most.

Main pros:

  • Works with both still and sparkling water
  • Five genuinely different scents in the variety pack
  • Automatic pod activation makes the system simple to use
  • Quick 180 degree twist opening
  • Wide opening makes refilling and adding ice easier
  • Fully dishwasher safe on the top rack
  • Leakproof when assembled and closed correctly
  • Lightweight Tritan Renew construction
  • No sugar or sweeteners need to be added to the water
  • Bestseller Plus pack provides up to approximately 25 litres of scented hydration based on air up’s stated maximum of 5 litres per pod

Main cons:

  • £41.99 combined price is a relatively expensive starting point
  • Replacement scent pods create an ongoing cost
  • Flavour is subtler than squash or conventional soft drinks
  • Some scents are much more convincing than others
  • The bottle does not insulate water like the steel Twist Pro
  • Multiple components mean slightly more cleaning than a basic bottle
  • Performance depends heavily on your sense of smell

Quick buying recommendation: If you are new to air up and are happy spending a little more for the more versatile bottle, the Twist Pro and Bestseller Plus Variety Pack are a very sensible combination. Existing air up owners who only drink still water may have less reason to upgrade, but sparkling water compatibility, automatic pod activation and easier cleaning make the Pro version significantly more practical.

Design & Build Quality

The Twist Pro feels considerably more like a conventional premium reusable bottle than the quirky hydration gadget air up could easily have become.

Stormy Blue is a particularly good colour choice if you prefer something understated. It has enough personality to stand out without looking childish or excessively bright, which makes it equally appropriate sitting on an office desk, in a gym bag or beside you in the car.

The Tritan Renew construction is one of the reasons the 600ml version works well as an everyday bottle.

There is a steel Twist Pro available for buyers prioritising insulation, but Tritan keeps this version relatively light and avoids the bulk associated with double-wall stainless steel. air up specifies Tritan Renew for the bottle body, food-grade silicone for the mouthpiece and sealing ring, and flexible TPE for the integrated strap.

It feels substantial enough to withstand normal everyday handling without making the mistake of pretending to be a rugged outdoor flask.

The bottle is also surprisingly tall for its 600ml capacity. At 259mm, it is worth checking the dimensions if you intend to place it beneath particularly low kitchen cupboards or carry it in a very small bag. Its overall proportions are still practical, but anyone prioritising compactness may prefer a shorter bottle.

One of the best changes is the lid.

Rather than fiddling with a conventional threaded top every time you want a drink, the Twist Pro uses a quick 180 degree opening action. It feels intuitive very quickly and is particularly handy when using the bottle while walking, exercising or sitting at a desk.

The integrated strap is smaller and more functional than the crossbody arrangement found on the air up O. It is primarily useful for grabbing the bottle, pulling it from a bag or carrying it short distances rather than wearing it around your body.

The wide opening is another small feature that makes a noticeable difference.

Refilling is quick, getting ice cubes inside is straightforward and cleaning access is much better than on narrow-necked bottles. air up specifically highlights the wider opening for quick refills and adding ice.

Quality control matters particularly around the lid and seals because the Twist Pro is marketed as leakproof. Correct assembly is important here. air up specifies that it is leakproof when a pod is installed and the lid is securely closed.

Used properly, that creates much more confidence about carrying it inside a backpack than you might have with an open straw-style bottle.

The mouthpiece deserves praise too. The food-grade silicone is softer against the lips than hard plastic and makes the bottle comfortable when repeatedly sipping throughout the day.

It does have more components than a completely ordinary water bottle, but nothing feels unnecessarily complicated once you understand how everything fits together.

Overall, the Twist Pro strikes a convincing balance. It feels modern and recognisably air up without sacrificing the practical qualities expected from a bottle designed for everyday use.

Features & Performance

The defining feature is still air up’s Scentaste system.

Instead of physically flavouring the water, scent from the pod travels with the air you draw through the mouthpiece as you drink. Your sense of smell combines that aroma with the sensation of drinking water, creating the perception of flavour.

The important word there is perception.

If you go into air up expecting the liquid itself to taste exactly like peach iced tea, watermelon squash or cherry juice, you may initially be disappointed.

The water remains water.

What changes is your overall sensory experience while drinking it. air up itself describes the resulting flavour as gentle rather than overwhelmingly strong.

Once that expectation is understood, the system becomes much easier to appreciate.

The Twist Pro’s ActiveOn mouthpiece also improves usability. Removing the lid automatically activates the installed scent pod, which means there is less fiddling around with pod positioning every time you want a drink.

That sounds like a small upgrade, but these are exactly the kinds of improvements that matter if a product is going to survive beyond the first week of novelty.

Wild Berry

Wild Berry is rated 3 out of 5 for intensity, which feels appropriate.

It offers a sweet berry aroma without becoming overpowering and works particularly well with cold still water.

It is probably one of the safest flavours in the pack. There is nothing particularly strange or experimental about it, and anyone who normally gravitates towards berry squash or fruit-flavoured water is likely to understand what it is trying to achieve immediately.

Its only weakness is that it is less distinctive than the stronger flavours in the selection.

Ice Tea Peach

Ice Tea Peach is one of the highlights of the pack.

air up rates it 4 out of 5 for intensity, and the stronger aroma helps give it more character.

Peach works particularly well with scent-based flavour because it naturally has such a recognisable aroma. There is enough familiarity here to evoke a peach drink without expecting the liquid itself to become sugary or syrupy.

With very cold water and plenty of ice, it makes an excellent everyday option.

Watermelon

Watermelon is another 4 out of 5 scent and arguably the most playful option in the box.

It has the kind of recognisable sweet aroma that suits air up’s system well.

This is where personal preference becomes important. Anyone who dislikes artificial-style watermelon sweets will probably find this less appealing than Apple or Wild Berry, while watermelon fans may put it straight near the top of the collection.

With sparkling water, it becomes particularly interesting because the carbonation gives the experience slightly more bite.

Cherry

Cherry carries the same 4 out of 5 intensity rating.

This is potentially the most divisive flavour in the Bestseller Plus pack.

Cherry aromas can quickly move towards sweets, fizzy drinks or confectionery rather than fresh fruit, and whether that is a positive depends entirely on your taste.

Sparkling water is where Cherry makes the strongest argument for the Twist Pro over a still-water-only bottle. The combination of fizz and cherry aroma feels closer to the experience people may be looking for when attempting to reduce conventional soft drinks.

It still does not become cherry fizzy pop, but it scratches more of that itch than still water does.

Apple

Apple returns to a milder 3 out of 5 intensity.

It is fresher and less sweet-feeling than some of the other pods and is one of the easiest flavours to drink repeatedly.

That makes Apple less exciting during the initial novelty period but potentially better over the long term.

It is the pod most likely to disappear into everyday use rather than constantly reminding you that you are using an unusual scent bottle.

Still Water Versus Sparkling Water

Sparkling water compatibility is one of the strongest reasons to choose the Twist Pro.

The standard experience with cold still water is refreshing and works particularly well with fruit pods.

Switch to sparkling water and the extra sensation from carbonation gives several flavours more presence.

Cherry and Watermelon benefit particularly well because they naturally lend themselves to fizzy drink associations. Ice Tea Peach makes slightly more intuitive sense with still water, while Apple and Wild Berry work nicely either way.

The ability to alternate between the two also prevents the system becoming repetitive.

air up officially confirms that the Twist Pro is compatible with both still and sparkling water.

Pod Longevity

air up states that each scent pod can flavour up to five litres of water through scent.

With five pods in the Bestseller Plus pack, that gives a theoretical maximum of approximately 25 litres.

The pack currently costs £11.99 and air up lists its effective cost at £0.48 per litre.

Pod strength does not feel identical from the first drink to the final one. Aroma naturally becomes less noticeable as a pod is used, and stronger scents tend to disguise that decline better than milder ones.

The resealable packaging is therefore useful. If you want to change flavour before finishing a pod, remove it before washing the bottle and return it to its packaging to help preserve the scent. air up specifically advises removing pods before cleaning and storing them back in their resealable pack.

Real-World Experience

The best sign that a hydration product works is when you stop thinking about the product itself.

That happens fairly quickly with the Twist Pro.

During the first few drinks, there is an understandable temptation to analyse every sip. Is that actually peach? How strong is the watermelon? Does sparkling water make it more convincing?

Once the novelty wears down, the experience becomes much more natural.

The Twist Pro simply becomes the bottle you reach for.

The quick-opening lid has a lot to do with this. A half twist is quicker and more convenient than repeatedly removing a traditional screw cap, while the automatic pod activation means there is very little to think about before drinking.

The 600ml capacity is also well judged.

It is enough for a meaningful amount of water without creating the bulk of today’s enormous handled tumblers. It works particularly well for office use, short journeys, the gym and around the house.

Heavy water drinkers will refill it several times each day, but the wide opening means that never becomes particularly annoying.

Where the Twist Pro really pulled ahead was when alternating between still and sparkling water.

Using the same scent continuously can become repetitive. Changing the actual texture of the water gives the system another dimension without needing to buy additional accessories.

It is particularly useful if your reason for considering air up is a habit of drinking fizzy drinks.

A glass or bottle of cold sparkling water with Cherry or Watermelon will not perfectly recreate your usual soft drink, but it is a considerably more interesting proposition than simply telling yourself to drink another glass of tap water.

The Bestseller Plus pack also proved a much better starting point than choosing one flavour based purely on its description.

Preference is highly personal.

A flavour that sounds ideal might turn out to be the one you enjoy least, while something you would never have bought individually can become a favourite.

Having five pods removes some of that risk.

The biggest pleasant surprise is Apple. It is not necessarily the flavour that immediately grabs attention, but the lower intensity makes it extremely easy to live with.

Ice Tea Peach is more immediately impressive.

Cherry and Watermelon offer the most fun, particularly with sparkling water.

Wild Berry sits comfortably in the middle as the safe all-rounder.

There are frustrations.

The first is that you need to remember this is not normal flavoured water. Anyone chasing a powerful taste may unconsciously start taking harder pulls through the mouthpiece in an attempt to get more scent, which is unnecessary.

The second is cleaning.

The Twist Pro is thankfully dishwasher safe, which is a major advantage, but it still consists of more separate pieces than an ordinary bottle. air up recommends taking apart the lid, strap, adapter, mouthpiece, straw and body before placing the appropriate components on the top rack, with the scent pod removed. Everything should be allowed to dry completely before reassembly.

It is easy enough once it becomes routine, but someone who hates maintaining reusable bottles should not pretend that air up eliminates the problem.

The third issue is running cost.

Once you find two or three favourite scents, buying replacement packs starts becoming part of owning the bottle.

That makes air up fundamentally different from buying a conventional reusable bottle once and using tap water indefinitely.

Whether that bothers you depends heavily on what the pods are replacing.

If you already drink plain tap water all day, air up is an additional expense.

If you routinely buy cans, bottles of flavoured water or fizzy drinks because ordinary water does not appeal, the economics are much easier to justify.

Who Should Buy This?

The air up Twist Pro makes the most sense for someone who knows they should drink more water but repeatedly finds plain water uninteresting.

That could include people who constantly add squash, regularly buy flavoured water or automatically reach for fizzy drinks throughout the day.

It is not a magic solution to hydration, but it removes one common excuse: boredom.

The Bestseller Plus Variety Pack makes this combination particularly suitable for beginners.

Buying five different scents gives you a much better introduction to the system than committing to several pods of one flavour. With intensity levels ranging between 3 and 4 out of 5, you also get a useful idea of whether you prefer subtler or more noticeable aromas.

The Twist Pro is especially worth considering for:

Sparkling water drinkers: Compatibility with carbonation is a major advantage and gives sweet scents such as Cherry and Watermelon a completely different character.

Office workers: The 600ml size is manageable on a desk, the lid closes securely and dishwasher cleaning keeps daily maintenance straightforward.

Gym users: Tritan keeps weight sensible, the built-in strap helps with carrying and the quick lid is convenient between exercises.

Students: It feels more interesting than an ordinary bottle and offers enough flavour variety to make repetitive water drinking easier.

People reducing fizzy drinks: Sparkling water combined with scents can offer some of the sensory interest of a soft drink without turning the water itself into one.

Existing air up users: Anyone using an older still-water model may find the Twist Pro’s improved lid, ActiveOn system and sparkling water compatibility worthwhile.

It can also work well as a gift.

The bottle feels more substantial than gifting pods alone, while the variety box prevents the recipient being stuck with one scent they may dislike.

It is less suitable for someone who already loves drinking plain water, wants insulated cold water throughout the day or dislikes anything other than strong conventional flavours.

People whose sense of smell is temporarily or permanently reduced may also experience a weaker effect because scent perception is fundamental to how the system works.

Alternatives & Comparisons

air up Twist

The regular air up Twist remains the cheaper route into the ecosystem.

Current 650ml Tritan versions are listed at around £25, compared with £30 for the 600ml Twist Pro.

If you simply want to try scent-based water and only intend to drink still water, saving the £5 makes sense.

The Twist Pro earns its premium through better everyday functionality, particularly sparkling water support, automatic pod activation, its wider opening and improved lid design.

For most people planning to use air up every day, the extra £5 is easy to justify.

air up Click

The Click is another interesting alternative within air up’s own range.

600ml Tritan Click bottles currently sit at around £25 and prioritise a one-click lid, leakproof construction and portability.

The Click is arguably the better choice for someone who wants the quickest possible opening system.

The Twist Pro remains more appealing if sparkling water compatibility is important.

air up Twist Pro Steel

The closest premium upgrade is the Twist Pro Steel.

Rather than Tritan, it uses double-wall stainless steel construction and is designed to keep still or sparkling water cold for up to 24 hours. Current smaller 480ml steel models are listed around £30, with other steel capacities also available.

The steel version is the obvious choice if temperature retention matters most.

The Tritan version makes more sense if you prioritise lower weight, visibility of the remaining water and a straightforward everyday bottle.

Waterdrop

Waterdrop attacks the same problem from a completely different direction.

Instead of using scent to create the perception of flavour, Waterdrop sells cubes that physically dissolve into the water. Its UK range includes reusable glass and stainless-steel bottles alongside Microdrink products, with current bottle and starter set pricing varying considerably depending on configuration.

Waterdrop is likely to suit someone wanting a more conventional flavoured drink.

air up is more distinctive because the water itself remains plain and you can change the perceived flavour by changing the scent pod.

The choice comes down to what you value.

If you want actual ingredients added to your drink and a stronger flavour, Waterdrop has the advantage.

If the whole attraction is making plain water more interesting without dissolving anything into it, air up makes more sense.

A Conventional Reusable Bottle

The cheapest alternative is also the most obvious.

A basic reusable bottle filled with tap water will cost dramatically less over its lifetime.

There is no scent system, no replacement pod cost and potentially less cleaning complexity.

For someone who already drinks plenty of water, that is arguably the smarter purchase.

The air up Twist Pro only becomes better value when its additional features solve a genuine problem, particularly if plain water currently leads you towards buying other drinks.

Is It Worth The Money?

The answer depends on whether you judge the Twist Pro as a water bottle or as a complete hydration system.

As a 600ml plastic bottle alone, £30 is expensive.

Add the £11.99 Bestseller Plus Variety Pack and your initial spend reaches £41.99 at current UK pricing.

There are countless reusable bottles available for considerably less.

But that comparison ignores the main reason anyone buys air up.

The value is in changing the experience of drinking water.

The Twist Pro adds enough practical improvements to make it feel like a mature version of the concept. Still and sparkling compatibility, a leakproof design, dishwasher-safe construction, automatic scent activation and a quick-opening lid are features you can appreciate every day rather than marketing gimmicks.

The Bestseller Plus Variety Pack is also reasonably priced within the air up ecosystem.

At £11.99 for five pods, air up calculates the cost at approximately 48p per litre based on its stated pod capacity.

Compared with plain tap water, that is clearly expensive.

Compared with regularly buying individual bottles or cans of soft drink, flavoured water or similar beverages, it becomes much more defensible.

Long-term value therefore depends on behaviour.

If the Twist Pro ends up forgotten in a cupboard after the initial novelty period, it is expensive.

If it becomes the bottle you use every day and encourages you to choose water when you would otherwise buy another drink, the value proposition becomes considerably stronger.

The £5 difference between a regular £25 Twist and the £30 Twist Pro is particularly easy to justify for most buyers.

Sparkling compatibility alone can be worth that difference, before taking the other improvements into account.

Our recommendation would therefore be to avoid judging air up solely by the cheapest possible entry price.

If you already know the basic concept appeals to you, the Twist Pro is probably the better long-term purchase.

As for the Bestseller Plus pack, it is arguably the smartest first pod purchase because it gives you five chances to find something you genuinely enjoy.

Overall, the bundle feels fairly priced rather than cheap.

Final Verdict

The air up Twist Pro demonstrates how much difference a collection of relatively small improvements can make.

The fundamental air up experience has not changed. You still drink water while scent creates the perception of flavour.

What has changed is how easy that system is to live with.

The 180 degree lid is quick. ActiveOn removes unnecessary pod adjustment. The wide opening makes refilling easier. Dishwasher-safe construction reduces cleaning hassle. The bottle is genuinely leakproof when used correctly, and compatibility with sparkling water adds an entirely new dimension to several scents.

Pairing the Stormy Blue 600ml Tritan bottle with the Bestseller Plus Variety Pack is an especially strong introduction.

Wild Berry is the dependable all-rounder. Apple is subtle but easy to drink repeatedly. Ice Tea Peach is one of the most convincing everyday options. Watermelon is fun and distinctive. Cherry comes alive particularly well when paired with sparkling water.

Having all five prevents the air up experience being judged entirely on whether you happen to like the first pod you buy.

There are still reasons not to purchase it.

The £41.99 combined cost is significant compared with a conventional reusable bottle. Pods require repeat purchases. Some people will simply find scent-based flavour too subtle, and the 600ml Tritan bottle cannot compete with insulated steel alternatives when it comes to keeping water cold for hours.

None of those issues undermine what the Twist Pro does well.

If your existing reusable bottle already keeps you happily drinking enough plain water, you probably do not need air up.

If plain water regularly loses the battle against squash, flavoured drinks and fizzy alternatives, the Twist Pro becomes much easier to recommend.

It turns hydration into something with enough variation to remain interesting without requiring you to physically flavour every bottle you drink.

More importantly, the Pro version is practical enough that the idea does not have to remain a novelty.

For new buyers, the combination of the air up Twist Pro Tritan 600ml and Bestseller Plus Variety Pack is one of the strongest ways to experience the system.

Overall rating: 4.5 out of 5

FAQs

Does the air up Twist Pro actually make water taste flavoured?

The water itself remains plain. air up uses scent pods and retronasal olfaction to create the perception of flavour while you drink. The resulting sensation is deliberately subtler than squash or a conventional soft drink, so expectations make a big difference to how impressive the system initially feels.

Can you use sparkling water in the air up Twist Pro?

Yes. One of the main advantages of the Twist Pro is compatibility with both still and sparkling water. This makes it particularly appealing to people attempting to replace fizzy soft drinks, and stronger scents such as Cherry and Watermelon can feel especially well suited to carbonation.

What flavours are included in the Bestseller Plus Variety Pack?

The Bestseller Plus Variety Pack contains one Wild Berry pod, one Ice Tea Peach pod, one Watermelon pod, one Cherry pod and one Apple pod. Wild Berry and Apple have an official intensity rating of 3 out of 5, while Ice Tea Peach, Watermelon and Cherry are rated 4 out of 5.

How long do air up scent pods last?

air up states that each scent pod can provide up to five litres of scent-flavoured water. The five pods in the Bestseller Plus Variety Pack therefore provide up to approximately 25 litres in total under the company’s stated usage figure. The pack is currently priced at £11.99, which air up lists as approximately £0.48 per litre.

Is the air up Twist Pro dishwasher safe?

Yes. air up states that the Twist Pro is fully dishwasher safe, with the top rack recommended. The pod must be removed first, and the bottle should be taken apart so the individual components can be cleaned properly. All parts should be completely dry before the bottle is reassembled.

Is the air up Twist Pro worth buying instead of the regular Twist?

For most regular users, we think it is. The standard 650ml Tritan Twist currently costs £25 compared with £30 for the 600ml Tritan Twist Pro. For the additional £5, the Twist Pro adds still and sparkling water compatibility, automatic pod activation, a quick 180 degree lid, a wider opening, leakproof construction and dishwasher-safe convenience. If you only drink still water and want the cheapest way into air up, the regular Twist remains good value. Otherwise, the Twist Pro offers enough improvements to justify the extra cost.
